The top-entry idea, in the maker's words

The whole product is one design decision: the cat goes in and out through a grated opening in the lid instead of through a low door. Petmate's own copy is explicit about what that is for: Unlike standard, open litter boxes, the Petmate Top Entry Litter Box has a unique "box-design" that completely encloses that space where your cat uses the restroom so that no litter can escape the box. The lid does double duty as the exit mat: As your cat jumps out, any remaining litter on his paws is trapped on the non-slip, textured lid and falls back into the box through grates, keeping your floors free of litter. The second stated purpose is keeping a dog out. Petmate's bullet list leads with Top entrance keeps dogs out of the litter box, and the description adds that Because of the taller walls and top-entry opening, dogs are unable to reach the bottom of the litter box to eat used litter. Those are the maker's claims, stated here as such; this page verifies the design and the published numbers, not how well any individual dog is defeated. The remaining bullets are small but practical: Wide opening for easy access, Rounded edges for easy lifting, and the box also carries a built-in hook for hanging litter scoops and an attached lid that opens from one side for easy cleaning (product page, read August 13, 2026).

Specs · the numbers and the missing unit

Petmate publishes a short, specific data block. The honest wrinkle is that the three dimensions carry no unit at all on the page: they print as Dimensions: 20.290X15.070X15.200. Inches are the natural reading and match the product's weight class, but that is our inference, not something the maker states, so the table below keeps the figures exactly as printed. One consequence of the top-entry design that a buyer should weigh before ordering: the cat must be willing and able to jump up onto the box and down through the lid. Petmate's copy takes the jump for granted, writing that the opening allows cats of all sizes to jump up and into the box and easily exit when they're done. If a cat is elderly, arthritic or otherwise unsure about jumping, ask your veterinarian whether this entry style suits it before buying; this page cannot answer that.

Ninety-five percent recycled plastic

The material claim is the most specific thing on the page, so it is worth reading exactly. The product page states the box is Made in the USA from 95% pre-consumer recycled materials and calls it eco-friendly; the bullet list repeats Made in the USA (product page, read August 13, 2026). That is a manufacturer statement, quoted verbatim, and this page treats it as such rather than endorsing it. On a sustainability page Petmate adds that it is preventing over 60 million pounds of waste from ever reaching a landfill every year, most of it post-industrial scrap reprocessed at its own polymer facility in Mansfield, Texas (environmental sustainability page, read August 13, 2026). The two pages use slightly different labels, pre-consumer on the product and post-industrial on the sustainability page, so both are reproduced here as the maker wrote them.

What the page does not say matters too. On August 13, 2026 we searched the product page for any content or safety certification, such as a BPA-free claim or a named resin standard, and found none. That is a dated absence, not a fault: no US rule obliges a litter box maker to certify anything. It does mean every material phrase on the page is the company's own description, with no outside certificate behind it.

The twelve-month replacement advice

This is the bluntest fact on the page, and it comes straight from the maker's Additional Information note. Petmate writes: We recommend replacing your cat's litter box every 12 months. Over time, odors can penetrate plastic and resins, leaving behind a stinky odor you can't get rid of. Plus, your cat's scratching alone takes a toll. (product page, read August 13, 2026). Read plainly, the maker of this box is telling buyers it is a yearly purchase, not a one-time one, and that the plastic itself absorbs smell it cannot be cleaned out of. At $39.99 (petmate.com, August 13, 2026) that is a running cost worth putting in the decision, not a footnote.

The same note adds a practical transition tip: To help your cat adjust to his or her new litter box, keep the old one behind for a short transition period. That is useful precisely because a top-entry box changes how a cat gets to the litter, and the maker concedes the cat needs time to adjust.

No warranty stated, and what the FAQ says

The product page carries no warranty terms, and that absence is deliberate rather than an oversight. Petmate's FAQ answers the warranty question this way: We offer a warranty on select Petmate products. Any applicable warranties will be outlined on that product's detail page. (FAQ page, read August 13, 2026). Because this product's detail page outlines none, the honest reading is that no written warranty applies to this box. The FAQ also notes that only products bought from Petmate or a Petmate authorized dealer are covered by warranty and customer-service support, a reason to keep the receipt whatever the purchase channel.

Returns sit beside the warranty and are clearer. The refund policy states that you can return items within 30 days of receiving your order and that Returns accompanied by the original receipt will be refunded in the same form of payment used., with defective products exchanged or refunded within 30 days from the original purchase date or during the warranty period (refund policy, read August 13, 2026). For this box, the warranty period clause has nothing to attach to, since no warranty is stated.

Recall record and paper trail

No US licence, registration or certification regime covers cat litter boxes, so nothing about this product is approved by any agency, and no maker in this category can honestly claim otherwise. The FDA lists pet accessories among the products it does not typically regulate (FDA, read August 10, 2026; fda.gov does not serve our server, so that citation keeps its browser read date). What can be compared is what each maker chooses to publish, and Petmate publishes a reasonable set: materials, dimensions, weight, a replacement interval, a refund policy and a SKU.

On the recall record, the check came back clean for this category. A read of CPSC's full recall database through its public Recall API on August 13, 2026, covering 9,944 recalls from June 8, 1973 through August 6, 2026, returned no recall naming a litter box. The only Petmate-branded recall in that record is from August 7, 2025 and concerns a laser-pointer and LED-ball toy set over a button-cell battery ingestion hazard, not any litter product (CPSC Recall API, read August 13, 2026; cpsc.gov itself does not serve our server).
