"Orthopedic" is an unregulated word. The spec sheet still tells you the truth, if you know which three numbers to read. Every fact below was read live on August 10, 2026.

The three numbers that matter

1. Foam thickness and construction. Any bed can print "memory foam" on the box. The questions are: how thick is the memory-foam layer, and is it a solid slab or a thin cap over cheap filler? A 1-inch memory layer over support foam is a budget bed; a 4-to-7-inch solid or engineered stack is an orthopedic-class one. This single spec explains most of the price difference between beds.
2. Your dog's weight vs the stack. Foam that supports a 30 lb dog bottoms out under an 80 lb one. Heavy and arthritic dogs need the thick end of the range · exactly the buyer thin beds are marketed to, and exactly the buyer they fail. For a dog with diagnosed joint disease, ask your veterinarian what surface helps.
3. The cover situation. Removable and machine-washable is the baseline; a waterproof liner under it protects the foam (foam itself is very hard to wash); replacement covers sold separately are what make a bed a years-long purchase instead of a disposable one.

And one non-number: no ordinary bed is chew-proof, whatever the listing implies. If your dog eats beds, that is a behavior problem to solve before a purchasing decision.

  The budget option: 1 inch of gel memory foam over 2 inches of support foam (bark.co, August 10, 2026). Honest value for small and young dogs; not the orthopedic bed the marketing implies.

• Casper Dog Bed Review

  The best-documented bed here: materials, dimensions and the full warranty text all published. Its catch is in its own spec table, where the sleeping surface is 3.5 inches deep on every size, including the one sold for 90 lb dogs (casper.com, August 11, 2026).

• Big Barker Bed Review

  The deepest published stack and the longest warranty here: 7 inches in three named layers and a 10-year No Flatten term (bigbarker.com, August 11, 2026). Also the only bed in the category with a university study, which its own report calls an open label single arm study of forty dogs.

Cats, briefly

Cats sleep anywhere, which is why cat beds are mostly a style purchase: the honest spec questions are just washability and whether the shape suits a curler or a sprawler. Heated beds are the exception with real specs to check (wattage, thermostat behavior, chew-resistant cord); we will cover them when we review cat furniture properly.

Paper trail · certifications and warranties

No US license regime covers pet beds, and no flammability standard applies to them: 16 CFR 1632 and 1633 define mattresses in human-sleep terms (16 CFR 1632.1 · 1633.1, read August 10, 2026). What CAN be compared is what each maker chooses to publish: a foam certification claim, a warranty with a stated term, or neither · which is exactly what the table's last two columns show, and why they are worth reading before the price column.

Checked August 11, 2026: the Casper and Big Barker rows re-read in full, both now linking their own reviews. On Casper, the foam cell now separates the 6.5 to 7.5 in outer profile from the 3.5 in sleeping depth, the warranty cell names the exclusions, and the certification cell records a searched-for absence. On Big Barker, three cells that said "not readable that day" on August 10 are now filled: the layer-by-layer foam stack, the price range, and a CertiPUR-US claim now confirmed present on the maker's own pages, though certipur.us blocked our server so the certifier side stays unchecked.
