Most dog food "ratings" online are marketing arithmetic. This page compares foods on their regulated paperwork instead: every fact below was read live on August 10, 2026 and carries its source.

How to compare dog foods on facts, not vibes

1. The AAFCO adequacy statement · method AND life stage. AAFCO's own words: AAFCO does not regulate, test, approve or certify pet food. (aafco.org, read August 10, 2026). The statement on the bag comes in two strengths: formulated-to-meet (the recipe satisfies nutrient math) and feeding-trials-substantiated (the food was actually fed to dogs in a trial). It also names a life stage: maintenance, growth, or all life stages, and growth statements say whether they include large-size dogs (70 lb+ adult weight). A maintenance food is not a puppy pick; match the life stage to your dog.
2. Guaranteed analysis, compared fairly. Protein and fat minimums, fiber and moisture maximums: the legally required per-product numbers. Compare wet to dry only after correcting for moisture, or the wet food will always look weaker than it is.
3. Calories per cup, not price per pound. Dense foods feed smaller portions. Cost per 1,000 kcal is the honest comparison: at the prices read August 10, 2026, High Prairie runs $58.99 for a 28 lb bag at 422 kcal/cup, and Nutro Ultra $86.98 for 30 lb at 369 kcal/cup; run the math for your dog's daily calories before trusting a $/lb sticker.
4. Manufacturer transparency. The WSAVA's nutrition-guidelines questions: who formulates the food, does the company own its plants, what quality-control testing does it run, what is its recall history. Brands that answer publicly earn trust; brands that will not are telling you something too.

Zignature Inception · reformulated December 2025

• Zignature Inception Dog Food Review

  All three recipes read on August 11, 2026: guaranteed analysis, calories, the maker's own prices, and the one line of label text that changes who the food is for.

Inception is Pets Global's brand (the Zignature company). It was reformulated and relaunched as Zignature Inception on December 16, 2025 (their press release), and the old inceptionpetfoods.com now redirects to zignature.com, so most Inception numbers on the internet describe a discontinued product. The current Chicken Meal Recipe, read August 11, 2026: protein 21.5% min, fat 14% min, 394 kcal/cup, $61.99 for 27 lb on the maker's own store, built on oats, barley and milo and Formulated without potatoes, legumes, corn, wheat, or soy. Two things the full review covers that matter here. The printed adequacy statement is the formulated-to-meet kind for growth, and it is not identical across the line: Chicken and Fish read including growth of large size dogs (70 lbs. or more as an adult) while Pork reads excluding them, which decides the choice for a large-breed puppy. And Zignature's own banner claim that it goes beyond AAFCO with our extensive feeding trials. sits on the same page as that formulated-to-meet statement.

VeRUS · the small-company outlier

• VeRUS Dog Food Review: Adult Maintenance

  Guaranteed against as-fed analysis, the missing adequacy statement, the two maker documents that disagree on calories, and what it costs per 1,000 calories. All read August 11, 2026.

VeRUS is a Maryland company that describes itself as a veteran and family-owned and operated business since 1993, with dry food made in upstate New York and Ohio (their FAQ, read August 10, 2026). Its quality claims are unusually specific and are the brand's own: Our food is tested every 15 minutes during the production process. and quarterly third-party testing. On recalls it states: VēRUS Pet Foods has never been involved in any recall since its inception 30 years ago, in 1993. · consistent with the FDA window we scanned, which lists no VeRUS entry. The Adult Maintenance recipe runs 22% protein / 10% fat, 361 kcal/cup (read August 10, 2026). The honest downsides sit in the paperwork, and a fuller search on August 11, 2026 confirmed them: no AAFCO adequacy statement appears on the product page, the downloadable nutrient PDF, the manufacturing page or the FAQ, so its method and life stage cannot be checked before buying; the product page and that PDF give different energy figures for the same formula, 3,184.37 against 3,383.78 kcal/kg; and VeRUS appears in neither state feed-license register we searched (below). It is also the dearest food on this page to feed: about $2.15 to $2.28 per 1,000 calories on the maker's own store that day, our arithmetic, against about $1.41 for Zignature Inception Chicken Meal on its own store the same day.

Nutro Ultra · the Mars line

• Nutro Ultra Adult Dog Food Review

  The label read off the maker's imaged panels, the missing adequacy statement, the guarantor's recall record, and a plain account of which numbers could not be re-read because nutro.com blocks our server.

"Ultra" in dog food searches almost always means Nutro Ultra, a Mars Petcare line branded around a trio of proteins: chicken, lamb and salmon, with chicken and chicken meal at the top of the ingredient list. It is grain-inclusive (sorghum, barley, oatmeal, brown rice), 24% protein / 15% fat, 369 kcal/cup (read from the label panels August 10, 2026 · nutro.com publishes them as images, so the adequacy statement was not readable online and lives on the bag). At Chewy the 30 lb Adult bag was $86.98, $2.90/lb, scoring 4.7/5 across 1,157 ratings (August 10, 2026). Two things to know: the guarantor, Mars Petcare US, had two Pedigree-brand recalls in the FDA window we scanned (May 2024, loose metal, terminated · July 2026, foreign plastic), neither touching Nutro; and the Ultra line has been reformulated and re-branded over the years, so check that any review you read, including this note, matches the current bag.

Blue Buffalo · the most completely published label here

• Blue Buffalo Adult Dog Food Review

  Life Protection Formula, adult chicken and brown rice: the full guaranteed analysis, ingredient order and AAFCO statement all published as text, plus where peas sit in the list and what the FDA's DCM file records (bluebuffalo.com, August 11, 2026).

It is the only food on this page whose maker publishes the whole regulated label as machine-readable text rather than as an image, which is why its row above is the most complete. Two facts the review sets out with their limits: peas are the sixth ingredient in a recipe sold on brown rice and oatmeal, and the brand is named in the FDA's diet and DCM graph with 31 reports counted through April 30, 2019, in a file the FDA never resolved. Its guarantor, Blue Buffalo Company Ltd, holds feed licences in both registers we query, listed at both its Wilton, Connecticut address and at 1 General Mills Blvd.

Grain-free and DCM · what the FDA record actually says

In its June 27, 2019 status report, the FDA named the dog food brands most frequently reported in canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) cases; Taste of the Wild was third, with 53 reports through April 30, 2019. The same report says, verbatim:

To date, the FDA has not established why certain diets may be associated with the development of DCM in some dogs. FDA third status report, June 27, 2019

The investigation page adds that adverse-event numbers do not supply sufficient data to establish a causal relationship with reported product(s), and its standing status, dated December 23, 2022, is: FDA does not intend to release further public updates until there is meaningful new scientific information to share. (FDA investigation page, read August 10, 2026.) So the honest framing is exactly that: a potential association, investigated, never established as causal, and not updated since 2022. Neither "grain-free causes DCM" nor "grain-free was cleared" is supported. If your dog has a cardiac history, ask your veterinarian before choosing any diet, grain-free or not.

Paper trail · what licenses exist, per brand

No dog food has pre-market approval from the FDA: food for animals doesn't need FDA's pre-market review to be legally marketed (FDA, read August 10, 2026); federal law instead requires safe, truthfully labeled food made in FSMA-registered facilities (that register is not public, so we cite the obligation, not a lookup). The per-product regulated document is the label itself: guaranteed analysis, ingredient order and the adequacy statement. On top of that, states license feed firms or register products; we ran the two public registers below on August 10, 2026 and re-ran all four lookups on August 11, 2026 with identical results.

Lookups: Texas OTSC · Minnesota MDA. Recall history: the 2012 Diamond Pet Foods Salmonella event is on record at CDC's archive (49 human cases linked to the Gaston, SC plant), and Taste of the Wild's own FAQ confirms the voluntary recall while stating, as its own claim, that no Taste of the Wild product was contaminated.

How we verify

FAQ

Is grain-free food dangerous? The FDA investigated a potential association between certain diets, many grain-free, and DCM; it never established causality and stopped public updates in December 2022. The full record, with the FDA's own words, is in the DCM section above. For a dog with a cardiac history, ask your veterinarian.

What does "AAFCO approved" mean? Nothing. AAFCO's own words: AAFCO does not regulate, test, approve or certify pet food. The meaningful label line is the adequacy statement: its method (formulated to meet, or feeding trials) and its life stage.

Formulated-to-meet or feeding trials · which is better? Feeding trials are the stronger substantiation: the food was actually fed to dogs under AAFCO procedures. All four foods on this page use, as far as their public pages show, the formulated-to-meet route.

How do I compare prices fairly? Per 1,000 kcal, not per pound. Divide the bag price by total calories (kcal/cup times cups per bag) and multiply by your dog's daily calories: a denser food at a higher $/lb can cost less per day.

Checked August 11, 2026: both state feed registers re-run (identical results, and re-queried again for Blue Buffalo Company Ltd, which holds Texas #712571 and #701492 and Minnesota #20269318 and #20092387), all three Zignature Inception labels re-read, the full VeRUS document set re-read, Blue Buffalo's label and recall page read for the first time, and nutro.com reachability re-tested (homepage 200, product and listing pages 403). Cells changed: Inception calories are now published (394 kcal/cup) with the maker's own price ($61.99 for 27 lb), and VeRUS now carries a maker-store price ($115.49 for 35 lb) plus a note that its two published documents disagree on calories.
